THE CHAYT FAMILY HISTORY BOOK

Sarah

Born in Nikolayev in 1896. She was educated in Russia, and could read and write Russian. She was interested in classical literature, opera and music and was a member of the same theatrical group as her brothers and sister.

She met Abram Mendelowitz (Abram) in Nikolayev. He and his father followed the Chayt family to Paris. Abram stayed but his father returned to Russia to perish in the Revolution. Abram and Sarah joined Anna and Sholom, Jacques and Jeanne in 1916 when they all came to the U.S. where they were welcomed by Fetter Benny (see Simcha's Family), and his family. Abram and Sarah were married in the U.S.A.

Their first born was Ethel on March 25, 1918. Eva was born on February 7, 1920 and Sam on January 17, 1925. Abram was Vice-President of the Millinery Union in new York and very active in the American Labor Movement. (see Plaque Honoring Abraham Mendelowitz in Kfar Saba, Israel.)

Sarah and Abram attended Franklin D. Roosevelt's and Harry S. Truman's Presidential Balls. Sarah died in the 1970's a few years after suffering a stroke. Sarah and Abram are buried in Beth Israel Cemetery in New Jersey.
