THE CHAYT FAMILY HISTORY BOOK

Maurice (Moishe Ber)

The first born, in Nikolayev in 1889, he was interested in reading the classics and opera and the theater. He was involved with a group involved in Yiddish Theater. Boris Tomashefsky and Sholem Secunda were his friends who made it to the U.S.A. and succeeded, Boris as a star and Sholem Secunda as a composer. Maurice was involved in defending his Jewish brethren being slaughtered by the Cossacks.

In 1909, he left for France to try to save the family. He established a shoe factory in Paris and sent for Simcha and Jacques. They followed in 1910. In 1911 Clara followed with Anna, Sarah, Berthe, Marie, David, Hershel, Esther, and Jules. In 1914 he was aroused with the idea of fighting for democracy (the War to end all Wars) so that his siblings would live in a free world. In May 1915 he was lost in Arras, France, an unknown soldier.

In Memoriam
Maurice Chayt 1889 - 1914

Ultimately our courageous and spirited ancestor Maurice did lose his life in yet another war and never made it to the New World (America).

In 1914 he was aroused with the idea of fighting for democracy (the War to end all Wars -- i.e. WW1) so that his siblings would live in a free world. In May 1915 he was lost in Arras, France, an unknown soldier killed in the line of duty - (Pauline).

But thanks to him the entire family got out of Russia before the Revolution and ultimately moved to, and prospered in, the USA. Please Keep in mind that if not for this man, none of us Chayt descendents -- NOBODY, might be here now.(-ls)

There is a memorial plaque on the the Remembrance Wall in the courtyard of the Synagogue de la Victoire in Paris which honors the memory of Maurice and (incorrectly) of his brother Jacques, who you will later learn also fought in the war, was wounded (and apparently reported killed). Most happily he was not killed and returned but with an injured leg.
