I have read
the instructions and feel I understand how to use this
utility
Take me to
the SURNAMES INDEX
The online CHAYT - CHAIT Genealogy is a group of .html file (web files) that allow you to browse through our family genealogical database on the World Wide Web. It contains data showing the relationship and dates associated with (currently) 418 individual in 144 families. You can jump from one person to another as you wish. This is the "interactive" feature. Anyone interested in obtaining the data file to work on themselves should contact either me, Leslie Spaiser, or Bob Levine.
What you will see when you begin, was automatically generated by a program called GED2HTML v3.1a (a shareware program we have yet to purchase), from a database we keep in a program called Family Tree Maker.
If you are the brave type, just jump in. Otherwise I hope the following instructions are helpful.
SUGGESTION: PRINT THIS PAGE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME BACK HERE WHILE YOU ARE NAVIGATING THE TREE.
1. If you search for all the current members with one surname you will not find them. This is because we list the MAIDEN NAMES of spouses. So under LEVINE we will not find Lynn (Bob Levine's wife), or his mom, Yvette (she is Yvette Chayt in our database) or his son Alan's wife (Marge - Margery MOSES).
2. THE FAMILY DIAGRAMS - (described below) look up from the selected individual so you see ancestors, but not all descendants (you can see one child at a time). To see the relationship of say, Alan Levine, to his family you must select Alan Levine from either a PERSONS list or from a parents tree data (children's names are listed - but not displayed on the tree). The best way to understand this is to try it . As confusing as this may seem, I find it pretty good. You can rapidly click your way around the whole family.
3. COVERAGE - We consider the 1rst generation our ancestor from Russia - Avrum Chayt. (We use the spelling Chayt for convenience - this man never left Russia so the english spelling of his name is a matter of interpretation. His two sons Herschel and Simcha, are the first generation to reach America. As explained in the previous link - and in the text later on (and in the Family History Book), produced the many offspring we collectively call "the family."
Our depth of accurate information to date (10/98) goes marginally to the 5th generation. Also the database shows ancestors of all persons including spouses, but we do not have that information - so there will be blank ancestor branches for persons related by marriage.
After reading this short section, go back up to the (I have read the instructions and feel I understand..) and click. This takes you to a Surnames Index from which you can find people by their surname. Or - you can look up the person you are interested in in a Persons Index.
NOTE: Some of the links from the Surname Index are not that accurate. (Chayt - for example) That is why I recommend using the Persons Index instead. (This problem will be fixed ASAP.)
The Persons Index more complicated than the Surnames Index but more accurate. I suggest you read that section below. Also navigation within the program requires that you understand the way the data is displayed - which may not be obvious.
In any case you can try your skills and if you get in trouble just come back here. I suggest you BOOKMARK (add to favorites) this page so you can quickly find it again.
***********************************************
1) Go to the Index of Surnames, scroll to the bottom, and click on PERSONS.
2) From this Index of Persons click on the line item : Rosa CHAIT - Karen CHAYT.
3) From the screen you get, find and click on : Avrum CHAYT.
You will see that Avrum is the father of Simcha and of
Herschel. click on Simcha: you will see that Avrum Chayt was
married to an Esther CHAYT, and that he had two sons Simcha and
Herschel.
4) Click on: 1. +Simcha.
You will see exactly the following information:
BIRTH: 15 Sep 1869, Russia
DEATH: 24 Mar 1944, Brooklyn,New York
Father: Avrum CHAYT
Mother: Esther CHAYT
Family 1: Bella GOLUB
Family 2: Clara GOLUB
MARRIAGE: Dec 1887, Russia
You will also see that he had 12 children, all from his
marriage to Clara Golub and all shown in a hyperlinked list. (He
had no children from his marriage with Bella Golub since there
are none listed.)
5) Now return to the previous view by
clicking on Avrum CHAYT (or use your BACK BUTTON).
6) This time click on : 2. +Herschel CHAYT
You will see that he had 7 children by his wife Freda CHAYT all
shown in a hyperlinked list.
Notice that their names are all spelled CHAIT !
You can click on any of the CHAIT children and see whatever is known by us. Most of what we have is thanks to Sylvia Fleischer (you can find her in one of the Indexes). The 3rd generation of CHAITs is in our database, but with very little feedback from them we may not have much current data.
***********************************************
What you have learned from this exercise is that Avrum Chayts
children (the spelling of his name is taken as Chayt - he never
had this name but rather a Russian name with that sound in
English) both had big families, but both families (when they
immigrated to America) ended up with slightly different surnames.
From this you have learned why we have Chayts and Chaits in the
same family. The emigration officials wrote it down differently
for the different families !
The program contains three levels of information. The information about an individual is in the third level (individual information files). The other levels are the Persons Index (level 2) and the Surnames Index (level 1). Actually these are just different ways of getting to the individual level and are only called 1 and 2 because you start in the Surnames Index.
Is a collection of surnames of all individuals in the database.
Using the surnames page should be self-evident. With the above
considerations in mind just click on a surname you want to
explore and continue from there.
Consists of a list of all of the current individuals (418) in
the database. The list is split into 15 ranges shown as follows.
(Green text is used to denote a
display on your screen - this is not a color you will actually
see.)

SURNAMES
The last entry is a link back to the Surnames Index (SURNAMES).
To find an individual determine which group contains the name you
want and click on it. You will get a list of individuals in that
name range.

You are looking for Bob Levine. First of all you better know his actual name is Bernard Martin Levine. Our database is very literal and we dont list people by their nicknames. OK - you should have determined that the name Levine falls in the range : Fanny KINITZ - Maya LURIE.
1) Click on the line "Fanny KINITZ - Maya LURIE" in the list.
You will see a list starting with : Fanny KINITZ, ending with
Maya LURIE and containing Bernard Martin Levine in between.

SURNAMES
In fact we see all of the Levine entries here. (Note that
spouses are missing - this is noted in CONSIDERATION
1).
2) Click on Bernard Martin Levine.
You will see the geneaology for Bernard Martin (Bob) Levine. This is the Individual's Data file. (It is combined with several other peoples individual data for convenience - and to limit the number of separate files in the database).
***********************************************
Note that at the bottom we see links called UP, BACK
and NEXT. Remember this is a sub-list of the main page
showing each range of names. UP means : go back
up to the main Persons Index (Range) page - here; (Michael Love (2)
- Joseph WOLFBERG ). BACK means jump back to the
previous range.
NEXT means jump ahead to the next range. BACK
and NEXT are useful if the name you want spans two ranges, or if
you want to see more individuals with the same surname but the
list ends before the last person of that surname.
When you click on a specific individual either from the Surnames Indexes or the Persons Indexes, you go to a specific person, (file) where you will see a three level tree showing that persons parents and their parents. (i.e. ancestors), their birth date (if we know it) and, a list of spouses and children. Most of our trees will not have data for the parents of persons related by marriage (spouses). We don't have that information.
While siblings are not on the tree, you can find out more about an individual's siblings by clicking on the parents; you then see a list of the parent's children (i.e. the person's siblings).
You can work your way up or down the tree and investigate that person's relationship to anyone else in the database.
Note that we do not have much below the fifth generation (Avrum
Chayt being the first), in our database.
Start the program by clicking on GO (below), or the hyperlink
(I have already read this and understand how to use this
utility - take me to SURNAMES) at the beginning of this
page.
As suggested you may want to print these instructions to have for
reference as you move into the program.
Either way you enter you come to the Surnames Index first. From
here you can select a surname and finally an individual.
Otherwise you can go to the Persons Index and find the desired
individual from there.
Thats it folks - it is not perfect nor is our database! But if you get the idea, you can use it to get all kinds of information about who is related to who and how. One good reason I have published this information is so that we can get your feedback in terms of additions, corrections, etc. This is the only way we can make it better and keep it up-to-date.
I encourage all to submit comments updates and corrections as
follows:
