Grandpa (Zaida) -- Simcha (Simon) Chayt
![]() |
Simcha (Simon) Chayt was born in the Lisinka suburb of Kiev, Ukraine, September 15, 1869 -- He died March 24, 1944 in New York City. Avrum Aba -- (Simcha's father) was left a widower with a son and daughter. He therefore wished to re-marry a woman who was not fertile so she could raise his children without the conflict of another family. |

| Zaida -- Circa 1910 | The Rabbi in Lisenka suggested Esther since she had been granted a divorce because she could not bear any children. Avrum married Ester. Simcha and Hersh (twins, not identical) were born to them the following year. | ||||||||||
| His kin were brothers,
Benjamin and Herschel and sister Shaindel, His
grandfather's name is unknown. He was left with an asthmatic condition due to a bout with the Spanish Influenza in 1917 in Tours, France and died in the USA of cancer of the prostrate in 1944 (12 years after doctors gave him 6 months to live in 1932). |

Simcha was raised with the help of his grandfather after his father was killed by a horse when he and his twin brother were infants. His (grand)father was a medicine man. He grew herbs and dried them, determining their various uses and benefits. People came to him for cures when city doctors had no cures.
Simcha Chayt had his education in Hebrew in Russia but was self-taught in Russian both reading and writing. He was a Cantor and also a shoemaker to earn a livelihood. He made shoes from scratch by hand. In the U.S. and in France too, he was a shoe repairman in his own business. He came to France in 1910 with Jacques, to join Maurice, his oldest son. They worked to accumulate funds to bring the rest of the family to France. In 1911 Clara joined them together with Anna, Sarah, Berthe, Married, David, Hersh, Esther, and Jules. In Paris, he learned enough French to understand reading and speaking.
He came to the U.S.A. in 1921 where he also learned to read and understand English. He insisted however, on speaking Yiddish. In 1932 he had an operation on his prostrate. It was discovered to be malignant and he was given six months to live. In 1937 Simcha and Clara celebrated their golden wedding anniversary together with their children, grandchildren, and other relatives plus the in-laws of the children. (See the picture of Bubba and Zaida at Their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1937.)
