Born in Nikolayev in 1898. She was educated in Russia and could read, write and speak Russian. In Paris she attended the "Ecole Israelite" de Baron Hersch et de Rothschild on Avenue Secretain 19 arrondissement. She could read, write and speak French. In the U.S. she went to night school where she and Charles learned English. She came to Paris in 1911. She worked in a war factory during WW I. |
After the war she met Charles who had been a Russian prisoner of war in Germany. He had taken the identity of a dead prisoner, Maurice Radofsky, and escaped to France. He told his story to Clara and explained who he really was before she would allow him to continue seeing her daughter Berthe. His family lived in Kiev, capital of the Ukraine. His real name was Charles (Shepsel-sheep) Alpert. Clara and Simcha wrote a letter to Leah Golub, Clara's mother, asking her to verify the information. His family was a highly educated one and occupied important positions in Kiev. His family was overjoyed upon hearing of his survival. They then corresponded regularly until the Revolution ended it all.
