Considerations When Viewing Photos

A (picture icon) Paris street map showing 49 Rue de Mare or View of Rue de la Mare circa approx 1920 (miniature - "called a thumbnail"), Looks like one of these examples. You can click on the icon or thumbnail to jump to a "full size" version of the picture. When you are finished viewing the "full size" picture, to get back to were you were - use your browser's back button . I use this method in many cases because the "full size" picture takes time to download from the internet to your computer. This is explained below.

With this in mind you might not choose to look at all of the pictures in "full size."

ABOUT FILE SIZE AND TIME TO SEE THESE ILLUSTRATIONS AND PHOTOS: "Full size" picture file sizes vary from about 30k to about 170k for the current set of pictures. That means many pictures will take a while to load. Note however that once you have loaded a file to your computer, for a while, at least, it will be stored on your hard disk, so next time you look it will come in much faster. For the first time viewing a picture, expect it to take 1 or 2 minutes depending on the speed of your (dial-up) modem and how busy the Internet is at that time.

The size of the "full size" picture in Bytes (1K = 1024 bytes) is specified below the thumbnail so you can get some idea of how long it might take to download it.

AS A BENCHMARK YOU CAN REFER TO THE FOLLOWING:

The largest file is the first one; The Clara and Simcha family in Russia - one of the earliest photos . My modem is correctly configured and running (at the moment) at 33.6 Kb. It is a busy time of day - so the web is busy but much less busy than on a weekend evening or even a weekday night. The file is 166,614 bytes in size.

It took 50 Seconds for me to transfer it on a first-time basis. That was very good. A file that size might easily take 2 minutes to come in completely under poor conditions.
