The Family of Sarah And Abraham (Abram) Mendelowitz

The families of Sarah and Abram were friends in Nikolayev, Russia (now in The Ukraine), where they were born. Sarah came to Paris with Bubba in 1911. Abram came with his father in 1912. His father went back to Russia where he died in the Revolution. Abram stayed in Paris with the Chayt family. When war broke out (WW1), he joined the French Foreign Legion. On April 26, 1915 at the battle of Gallipoli he was wounded. The medics wanted to remove his leg, but he convinced them not to and he recovered. At the end of August 1915 he sailed for the United States. He brought Sarah to the US in 1916 and they were married March 31, 1917.

In July 1929 Abram was operated on for Cancer. Fortunately he survived and he and Sarah lived to celebrate 49 years of marriage.

Abram spent his life as an activist in the American Labor Movement. On January 20, 1949 he and Sarah attended the inauguration of President Harry S. Truman, and on the 20th of January 1961 the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. In appreciation for his work on behalf of the United Hat & Cap Makers Union, he was honored with a plaque on the Mendelowitz Pavilion in Kfar Saba, Israel.

Abram died November 14, 1966. Sarah had a stroke in November 1968. She died January 11, 1979. They had three children; Ethel, Eva, and Sam (Sammy).

Ethel

Born March 27, 1918 in the Bronx, she got an Associates Degree from Pace College and spent her business years as a secretary.

She and Jack Brown were married on December 17, 19??. They moved from Westchester Co. in New York to Ft. Lauderdale Florida, where they have prospered and have enjoyed a long and active retirement. Ethel and Jack eventually moved to Arizona where Sharon has been living. Sharon added an in-law apartment for them to her house. Jack died sometime in 2005.

Ethel and Jack have two children, Sharon and Sanford (Sandy). Sharon has a Master's Degree in Social Work and lives and practices as does her husband, Richard B. Taran (a clinical Psychologist) in Nashville Tennessee. They have two sons, Andrew (Drew) Howard and Jason Evan.

Sandy married Lynn Nurenberg. They had two sons, Scott Howard and Eric. The marriage ended in divorce with Lynn having custody of the children. Sandy remarried to Sherri Schwartz. and they have one son Gregory. Sherry has a son, Jay, of a previous marriage. They all reside in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sharon eventually moved to Sunshine Arizona and Ethel and Jack joined them. Sharon built an in-law apartment for them so they could have privacy and be comfortable. Jack died sometime in 2005.

Eva (Rive)

Born February 17, 1920. She married Seymour Brill. They had one child, Lynn. After their divorce, Eva married Leon Besen who adopted Lynn as his daughter. Eva and Leo had one son, Michael. Lynn married Jonathan Marlman who is a pathologist in Mobile, Alabama where they reside.

They have two children, Francine (Fran) and Andrew. Michael married Patricia (Patty) and they have one girl born in 1984. They lived in White Plains, N.Y. Leo died in 1985. and in 1986 Eva remarried to Al Dinep in Ft. Lauderdale Florida where they lived in retirement. Al passed away after fighting cancer for several years. Eva died sometime in late 2006.

Samuel (Sammy) (Schmuel)

Born on February 7, 1925, with Clara and Berthe helping in the delivery at home until the doctor arrived. He was born a 'blue baby' and Berthe kept him alive by giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the doctor arrived. They kept him warm with wrappings of absorbent cotton and heating lamps. Sam served in the Army before attending West Point and Medical school. He has his own practice in radiology in New York City. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois, and did his internship at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He met Joyce Selby from Danville, Ill. They were married at the Palmer House in Chicago and had four sons. Kenneth, Allan, Spencer, and Clifford. Sam and Joyce changed their name from Mendelowitz to Madel.

Kenneth does commercial advertising, also software for computers. Allan is a surgeon, has married Carol and were expecting a child in May, 1986.

Spencer is a radiologist in Boston, Mass. where he lives with his wife. Clifford creates custom-made furniture.

Sam and Joyce divorced and Sam remarried Grace. They have a son Jaime and live in Fort Lee, N.J.
