Berthe met Charles who had been a
Russian prisoner of war in Germany, after the war (WW I).
He had taken the identity of a dead prisoner, Maurice
Radofsky, and had escaped to France. He told his story to
Bertha's mother Clara and had to explain who he really
was before Clara would allow him to continue seeing her
daughter. Eventually they were married and had their
first child, Bernard, born on May 25, 1920. They lived
in La Boissiere, suburb of Paris until 1923 when they
left for the U.S.A. together with Clara, Henri (Hershel),
Estelle, Jules, Yvette, and Pauline. Several years later
they applied for American citizenship where Maurice
Radofsky requested the use of his true name, Charles
Alpert.
They studied English in night school. Their daughter
Rose was born as Baby Alpert April 20, 1928. Charles died
in the 1970's at the age of 88. Berthe passed away after
many years in a convalescent home in Florida.
